Cross sums explained

How cross sum puzzles work

Each clue points to a row run or column run. Fill the white cells with digits 1 through 9. The digits in a run must add up to the clue total, and no digit can repeat inside that run.

  1. Across clues. These apply to the white cells to the right of a clue cell.
  2. Down clues. These apply to the white cells below a clue cell.
  3. No repeated digits. A run cannot use the same digit twice.
  4. Intersections solve the grid. Every white cell must satisfy both its across and down clue.

Cross sum example

A 2-cell clue of 17 must use 8 and 9. A 3-cell clue of 6 must use 1, 2, and 3. These unique combinations are the easiest way to start.

Cross sums vs Sudoku
